Training Courses

Neighbourhood Watch Training Courses. This is to let you know that the ‘Full day’ training courses that were advertised recently are being restructured. We are doing this because most of you indicated you would prefer a shorter and more informal type of initial training. Consequently the course(s) you enrolled upon, namely Personal Safety will not be taking place. The GOOD NEWS – the alternative training is being prepared and will commence in February 2008. It is anticipated that by reducing the courses to this shorter time the training will be more accessible to everyone in Neighbourhood Watch, including their families and friends. Furthermore the training will be coming to your doorstep. The trainers will now be available to attend meetings organised by you in your own neighbourhoods and financial support may be available to pay for suitable venues. Details of the training sessions are shown below. The official launch of the training will be made at the Neighbourhood Watch Conference at Nottingham Trent University’s Clifton campus on 12 January 2008 and training will commence in the Spring, although bookings can be made from now. Should you require any information regarding the courses please contact: Peter Usherwood on Peter.Usherwood@nottingham.ac.uk or by phone on 0115 951 3230; Dean Brown on 0115 967 2605; or Des Corban on 0115 967 2627. To book any of the courses for your Neighbourhood Watch Group contact Rachael Green on nhwproject1@nottinghamshire.pnn.police.uk, or by phone on 0115 967 2606. Course Details Personal Safety – this training course will show you how you can take some practical steps to help reduce your risk of becoming a victim of violence and aggression. This will also include looking after your neighbours’ property:- What you should and should not do in the event of a burglar alarm. By the end you should feel far more confident about being a Neighbourhood Watch volunteer and to advise your friends and neighbours about their personal safety. Security and Safety in the Home – this training session will look at how you can ensure your safety in the home by improving your knowledge and understanding of crime and fire prevention and avoidable injuries. At the end of the training you should be able to: Þ Identify the common home security risks and what steps to take to reduce the chances of becoming a victim of burglary. Þ Identify the common fire and accident risks in the home and practical ways to reduce the risks. Þ Feel more confident as a NHW volunteer to inform other people about home safety and security. Identity Theft and Internet scams – Every day your personal security is at risk. Your dustbin contains countless secrets. Your daily transactions tell others of your personal details. The postman, the refuse collector and the neighbours are among many who may know you are away. Is your computer entirely safe? This training session is designed to look at the field of identity theft and will also contain a short input on Internet scams. Nobody will be required to use a computer at the training session. At the end of the training you should be able to: Þ Recognise the signs of identity theft. Þ Know how to reduce the risk of being a victim of identity theft. Þ Recognise common Internet ‘scams’ and how to avoid them. Þ Feel more confident as a NHW volunteer to inform other people about identity theft issues. We hope you are able to participate in this opportunity to make your community a safer place. |
